Steve Harris

At the age of 29, Steve Harris already has 11 years of radio experience under his belt.

"I always wanted to be a presenter, but I wasn't always confident that I could do it," he says. "When I plucked up the courage to give it a go at my university radio station, I asked for a slot where the least number of students possible were listening; so they gave me the weekend breakfast show!"

Over the course of the next four years he became a confident amateur broadcaster, broke a world record for the longest radio show ever, and won the Best Male Presenter award at the Radio One Student Radio Awards. And then he got his break.

"I was offered the overnight show on TFM on Teesside in early 2001. Being from Wales, I knew absolutely nothing about the North East. I didn't even realise how far North it was. The train from London to Darlington only took about half an hour more than the train from London to Nottingham, so I thought Middlesbrough was just a bit past Nottingham!"

He stayed on Teesside for four years, quickly graduating from overnights to the evening show, and impressing within EMAP; broadcasting on both the Manchester and Birmingham RSLs for Kerrang! Radio, and presenting a show on Kerrang! in the West Midlands from the station's launch in 2004.

In May 2005, he made the move to Birmingham to present Kerrang!'s evening show. "Presenting a show like that was so exciting. I was doing at least a couple of interviews a day on a show with a unique music policy and a really hot format." In his eighteen months on the show he increased its reach by 73%.

By January 2008, he had also worked on XFM London, XFM South Wales, Southern FM in Brighton and Mercury FM in Crawley. And now he is the voice of teatime on the BBC's biggest local radio station; BBC Radio Solent.

Between 4pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday, Steve broadcasts his mix of current affairs and lifestyle to Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. "Working for the BBC is amazing. The variety of subjects that I deal with really stretches me, and no-one gets to play a wider mix of music."

Outside of work, Steve is a keen runner, a big fan of all types of music, and his time on Teesside has left him a fan of Middlesbrough football club.

An intelligent broadcaster with a keen wit and a warm engaging style, Steve is a talent to watch out for.
